Every time a new generation is rumoured, the same conversation starts up again. Someone posts a mock type chart with Digital or Space on it, a hundred people argue about what it should be weak to, and then the games come out with eighteen types exactly like before. Fairy arrived in 2013. Nothing has been added since.
Pokémon Wind and Wave are the next mainline pair, and I have seen the type speculation start early this time. So here is my honest attempt to judge the popular candidates. To be clear up front: none of this is a leak, and I have no information anyone else does not have. This is a fan asking what a nineteenth type would need to do to be worth adding.
Adding a type is not a small change
This is the part most mock charts skip. A new type is not one new column. It is a new row and a new column against every existing type, which means eighteen offensive matchups and eighteen defensive ones that all have to be decided, balanced, and then explained to players. It also retroactively changes every Pokémon that should arguably have the new type, and every move that should arguably belong to it.
Fairy is the example everyone points to, and Fairy was a deliberate rebalancing exercise, not a theme. Dragon had been running the competitive scene for two generations. Fairy resisted Dragon, gave Steel and Poison something to do again, and retyped dozens of older Pokémon in the process. It solved a problem. Dark did the same in Gen 2 by giving the game an answer to Psychic.
That is the bar. A new type gets added when the battle system needs it, not when the flavour would be nice. Keep that in mind for everything below.
Digital, or Tech
The pitch is obvious. Porygon and its evolutions are literally made of code. Rotom lives in appliances. Magnemite was born in a lab. Silvally is a manufactured creature. There is a visible cluster of artificial, machine, and data Pokémon that currently gets filed under Normal, Electric, or Steel and does not really fit any of them.
The problem is that Steel and Electric already do most of the work. Steel covers the manufactured, resistant, industrial idea. Electric covers the powered and circuited idea. A Digital type would mostly take Pokémon away from those two rather than fill a genuine hole. And what would it beat? The intuitive answer is Electric, because a virus corrupts the machine, but Electric is not exactly overpowered right now and does not need another check.
Verdict: thematically tidy, mechanically unnecessary. I would put this low.
Space, or Cosmic
This one has the strongest case, and it is the one I would actually bet on if I had to pick. Deoxys came from a meteor. Solgaleo and Lunala are the sun and moon. Minior falls from the ozone layer. Elgyem and Beheeyem are grey aliens with no attempt at subtlety. Clefairy has an entire mythology about arriving on a meteorite. Necrozma eats light from another dimension.
All of those are currently Psychic, and Psychic is doing far too many jobs. It covers telepathy, dreams, aliens, dimensions, cosmic horror, and also Slowpoke. Splitting the extraterrestrial and cosmic material out into its own type would relieve genuine pressure rather than invent a new category.
A plausible matchup: Space is strong against Psychic and Dragon, resisted by Steel and Dark, and weak to Fighting and Bug on the grounds that grounded, physical, mundane things resist the cosmic. That is speculation, but it is the sort of speculation that at least fits the existing logic of the chart.
Verdict: the most likely of the popular candidates, and the only one I think has a real argument.
Sound
Sound is interesting because it already exists in the games, just not as a type. It is a move flag. Sound-based moves ignore Substitute, hit through the Soundproof ability, and get their own interactions. Boomburst, Hyper Voice, Overdrive, Sparkling Aria, Clangorous Soul. The mechanic is fully implemented and has been for years.
That is exactly why I do not think it becomes a type. Game Freak has had the tools to promote Sound for three generations and has chosen every time to keep it as a cross-type property instead. Making it a type would strip Hyper Voice from Normal, Boomburst from Normal, Overdrive from Electric, and Sparkling Aria from Water, and it would leave you asking what Toxtricity, Primarina, Kricketune, Chatot, and Exploud are supposed to be now.
There is also a design reason. Sound moves are interesting because a Fairy and an Electric type can both have them. Turning it into a type takes that away.
Verdict: it stays a mechanic. I would be genuinely surprised.
Light
The oldest fan pick of them all. If Dark exists, Light should exist. It feels symmetrical and it feels obvious.
It is also already taken, and this is the detail people miss. The Japanese name for the Dark type is Evil, not Dark, so there was never a light and shadow pairing to complete in the first place. And when Game Freak did add a bright, radiant, morally-coded counterweight to Evil, they called it Fairy. Fairy resists Dark, hits it for super effective damage, and covers the sparkle, purity, and moonlight material. Clefairy, Togekiss, and Gardevoir are the Light type. They just have a different name on the tin.
Verdict: this ship sailed in 2013.
The also-rans
Slime, usually proposed for Muk, Goodra, and Grimer. Poison and Dragon already have them and neither is complaining.
Wind, which comes up more than usual this time because of the game's title. Flying already covers it, and Gen 9 quietly introduced Wind-based moves as another cross-type flag, which is Game Freak telling you what they think the right solution is.
Crystal or Glass, for Sableye, Carbink, and Gigalith. Rock and Fairy have this covered.
Cosmic Dust, Time, Void, and the various one-off suggestions built around a specific legendary. A type that exists to serve four Pokémon is not a type, it is a signature ability.
What a new type would mean for Pokédle
Selfishly, this is the part I think about most. A nineteenth type would mean rewriting the type chart guide from scratch, because every cell in it changes. It would add a new option to the type-based guessing games, which sounds trivial but shifts the odds on every guess players make.
It would also break a lot of people's instincts, which is honestly the fun part. Everyone who has memorised the chart would be starting over on one row and one column. The first month after a type addition would be the most interesting month the daily games have had.
What I actually expect to happen
Zero new types. That is my prediction and I do not think it is a brave one. The last four generations each answered the question of what is new this time with a battle gimmick rather than a chart change. Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, Dynamax, Terastallisation. Those are easier to design, easier to market, easier to remove from the next game, and they do not force a rebalance of twenty-five years of type interactions.
Terastallisation is the interesting precedent here, because it let a Pokémon temporarily change its type. That is arguably Game Freak testing how far they can push type identity without touching the chart itself. If Wind and Wave does something in the type space, I would expect it to look like that: a mechanic that plays with the eighteen types rather than a nineteenth one.
Still, Space is the one I would keep an eye on. If any of these ever ships, it is that one, and Psychic has been overloaded long enough that the argument writes itself.
