About Spot the Fake Team Member
Spot the Fake shows you a gym leader's team from the classic games, plus one impostor Pokémon. Your job is to tap the one that was never on the roster. The fake always matches the leader's type, so you can't guess on type alone. Five rounds, three mistakes allowed.
It rewards real game memory: Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn gym battles from Red through Emerald. If you've actually fought Brock, Whitney, or Wallace, you'll spot the odd one out.
Rules & scoring
Each round shows a gym leader (or Elite Four member) and six Pokémon, five real teammates plus one impostor. Tap the impostor.
You get five rounds per run and can afford three total mistakes before the run ends. Every correct pick advances you; the streak tracks whole-run completions.
Strategy tips
Learn the signature Pokémon per leader, not the whole team. Every gym leader has a headline mon (Onix for Brock, Miltank for Whitney) and the impostor is never that one, so you can immediately eliminate the most famous face.
Watch for regional overlap. The fakes often come from later regions where the type is more common (a Galarian Rock-type on Brock's Kanto team, for example). If a Pokémon post-dates the game the leader is from, it's almost certainly the fake.
When you genuinely don't remember, pick the least iconic Pokémon on screen. Real gym rosters lean heavily on memorable species; obscure filler is more often the plant than the real thing.
Frequently asked questions
- Where do the gym leader teams come from?
- Gens 1–3: the FireRed/LeafGreen, HeartGold/SoulSilver, and Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald rosters. Teams are deduped to unique species so the puzzle stays readable.
- How is the fake Pokémon chosen?
- The impostor always shares the gym's type (a Rock-type fake on a Rock gym, for example) but was never actually on that leader's team. Type knowledge alone won't save you.
- Why only Gens 1–3?
- These leaders have the most recognizable teams. The fakes are picked to be plausible, not obvious, so you need to remember the real lineups.
- Do Elite Four members show up?
- Yes, Elite Four rosters are included alongside the gym leaders, so expect Lorelei, Karen, or Glacia to appear on any given day.
- Can I retry a round if I misclick?
- No, a tap locks in your guess. That's why you get a three-mistake buffer across the five-round run.
