About Identify that Cry

The Pokémon Cry Quiz plays one Pokémon's official cry, and you have six guesses to name it. From Pikachu's iconic shout to obscure Hisuian growls, the cry is your only clue.

A fresh cry is selected every day from all 1,025 Pokémon. No account, no install, hit play, listen, and type your answer. Perfect for testing how deep your Pokédex knowledge really goes.

Rules & scoring

Press play to hear the daily cry. You can replay it as many times as you like before locking in each guess. Six tries total.

The audio never changes between guesses, only your remaining attempts count down. A correct answer wins the day; six misses reveal the Pokémon and reset your cry streak.

Strategy tips

Length first, pitch second. Sub-half-second cries are almost always Gen 1 or Gen 2 (the originals are famously tiny 8-bit samples). Anything longer than a second with real dynamics is Gen 5+.

Listen for real-world sounds hidden in the mix. Bird chirps point at Flying types, growls at big quadrupeds like Arcanine or Ursaring, and clean synth tones at Steel or Electric types.

When two Pokémon share evolution audio, the base form usually has the shorter, higher-pitched cry and the final form is deeper and longer. Charmander → Charmeleon → Charizard is the textbook example.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the Pokémon cries come from?
Cries are pulled from the official PokéAPI, which mirrors the in-game audio from the mainline Pokémon games.
Why does the cry sound weird for some Pokémon?
Many older Gen 1 and Gen 2 cries are extremely lo-fi by modern standards, that's authentic to the originals, not a bug.
Can I replay the cry?
Yes, you can replay the daily cry as many times as you need before locking in a guess.
Do evolutions share the same cry?
In many older generations yes, evolutions share a base cry with pitch shifts. Newer generations give each stage a distinct sound.
Is there a way to slow the cry down?
Not in the game itself, but repeat plays are unlimited. Most players find they only need two or three listens to spot the family.
