About Pokédex Trivia
Pokédex Trivia gives you a real Pokédex entry with the Pokémon's name redacted and asks you to name who it describes. It's the closest thing to being a Pokédex researcher: read the flavor text, decode the clues, and guess in six tries.
Every entry is sourced from the official games, and a brand-new redacted entry is published every day. Great practice for Pokémon quiz nights and a sneaky way to learn lore you've never bothered reading.
Rules & scoring
You get one Pokédex entry and six guesses. The Pokémon's name, any obvious form giveaways, and its evolutions are blanked out as ____.
The entry itself never changes; only your guesses accumulate. Get it in one for the cleanest solve, or grind through six attempts to keep the streak barely alive.
Strategy tips
Habitat is the single strongest signal. "Found near volcanoes" narrows the pool from 1,025 to under 30. "Deep-sea trench", "tall grass in Kanto", or "ancient ruins" each cut a similar chunk.
Behaviour verbs beat physical descriptions. Words like "hoards", "mimics", or "lures" are almost always attached to a specific signature Pokémon (Meowth, Zorua, Chinchou) rather than a whole family.
If the entry mentions height or weight in vaguely superlative terms ("the largest", "one of the heaviest"), you're almost certainly looking at a pseudo-legendary or an outlier like Wailord, Snorlax, or Steelix.
Frequently asked questions
- Are the Pokédex entries official?
- Yes, every entry is pulled from real in-game Pokédex flavor text, with the Pokémon's name and any obvious giveaways blanked out.
- Why are some entries harder than others?
- Some Pokémon have very specific lore (Mewtwo, Eternatus), while others share habitats or descriptions with many evolutions. The puzzle pool is fully randomized across all generations.
- Is this a good way to study for Pokémon trivia?
- It's one of the best, Pokédex entries are the source material for most Pokémon trivia questions, including the ones in our Pokémon quiz daily challenge.
- Which game's entry am I reading?
- Entries are drawn from across the mainline games so a single Pokémon may show up with its Emerald, Ultra Moon, or Violet flavor text depending on the day.
- Are legendary Pokémon in the pool?
- Yes, but their entries are often the most distinctive, so a legendary day is usually easier, not harder.
