Guess That Pokémon
A free Pokémon guesser you can play right in the browser. Start with a zoomed-in sprite and six guesses, and if that gets easy there are seven other ways to name a Pokémon here: by cry, by Pokédex entry, by fusion sprite, by shiny palette, and a few more.
Eight ways to guess
Every mode asks the same question in a different way, and they all reset at midnight so the whole site shares one set of puzzles each day.
Guess from a zoomed sprite
The classic. A tight crop of a sprite zooms out with every wrong answer. Six guesses to name it.
Guess from the cry
No picture at all, just the sound. Surprisingly hard once you leave the first two generations.
Guess from the Pokédex entry
A real Pokédex entry with the name blanked out. The wording usually gives away the type before the species.
Guess a fusion
Two Pokémon spliced into one sprite. You have to name both halves, and partial credit counts.
Spot the real shiny
Four recolours of the same Pokémon, only one is the actual shiny palette. Ten rounds.
Draw it from memory
The reverse challenge. You get a name and sixty seconds to sketch it, then your drawing gets scored.
Tips that actually help
Look at the outline before the colour. On the first zoom level you usually only get a patch of pixels, and the useful signal is the silhouette edge: a wing tip, a fin, a curl of tail. Colour on its own is a trap because so many Pokémon share palettes.
Use the crop position. The sprites are cropped from the centre, so a big empty area on one side often means the Pokémon is tall and thin rather than round.
When you are stuck, guess a Pokémon from a generation you have not tried yet. A wrong guess costs you one attempt but buys a bigger picture, and that trade is usually worth it on the third or fourth try.
For the cry mode, listen for length rather than pitch. Older cries are short and harsh, while newer ones are longer and more melodic, which narrows the generation fast.
Questions people ask
- How do you play Guess That Pokémon?
- A zoomed-in sprite appears and you type the name of the Pokémon. Each wrong guess zooms the picture out a little further, so you get six chances in total. Guess it on the first look and you get the best score.
- Is this Pokémon guesser free?
- Yes. Every game here is free and there is no account or sign-up. Your streaks and stats are stored in your own browser.
- How many Pokémon can show up?
- All 1,025 Pokémon from Generations 1 through 9 are in the pool, so Kanto regulars and obscure Paldea picks are equally likely.
- Can I play more than once a day?
- The daily puzzle is the same for everyone and resets at midnight in your timezone. If you want to keep going, the Unlimited section lets you play round after round.
